How to make a bed with a footboard? Complete manual update 03/2023 (2023)

You've been making your bed for decades, but do you get it right every time?

For example, do you know the three methods of creating hospital corners? But why do we call them that? Stay tuned. Making your bed isn't rocket science, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind to ensure you get the most restful night's sleep.

If you're the type who wakes up with sheets wrapped around your feet, this tutorial is for you. Because nobody likes to sleep on tangled sheets.

layers of a bed

base layer

You can add two levels if you want:

  1. A dust ruffle is a skirt that wraps around the box spring and prevents the floor from peeking out from under the mattress. This is sometimes referred to as a bed skirt. There are streamlined and ruffled variations (hence the name).
  2. While a mattress is technically optional, we believe it is necessary. Some mattresses have extra soft comfort layers, but their real job is to protect you from the mattress fabric. Anything under the covers can eventually end up on the mattress. Moving or donating your mattress is hampered by unsightly stains caused by sweat and other human fluids. You can extend the life of your surface by using a mattress pad or protector.

bajera

Bottom sheets often have elastics sewn into the seams or around the entire perimeter. Fitted sheets can be difficult to fold, but they're worth it for the clean, comfortable bed they provide.

top sheet

The top sheet is the next level. Unless you buy each piece individually so you can mix and match colors and patterns, the bed sheet will usually match the pattern and color of the fitted sheet.

Ceiling

Depending on the weather and taste, blankets are not necessary. The blanket can be tucked between the top sheet and mattress, folded at the end of the bed, or placed in a basket. That option is up to you.

Top layer

A duvet, duvet, or duvet forms the top cover. Duvet covers are becoming increasingly popular due to their comfort. A duvet cover can be machine washed and then simply used to hide a comforter, but a heavy comforter or comforter would need a professional cleaning.

Pillow

Decorators often cite the law of odd numbers. This may involve using three, five, or seven pillows. Since only one or two pillows are needed for a good night's sleep, it's important to have a clean, dry place to store them when not in use. A chest or basket by the bed works well.

How to build your own bed

clean the bed

Lay a flawless foundation. Separate sheets, pillowcases, duvets, duvets, and blankets. Keep them off the ground if possible. To use them, simply hang them over a chair or other piece of furniture.

lay the sheet

Find the shorter end of the leaf and the longer end of the leaf. First fold one end over the top edge near the headboard, then fold the other end along the same side as the foot end of the bed. Starting at one corner and working clockwise will eventually get you to the other three. Remove wrinkles and check corner elastic fit.

The length of the longest side of the blade is not always obvious. It's a lot less complicated when your sheets are scratched. Make sure the stripes are vertical and the blade is in the correct position.

Place the top sheet

Lay it on the mattress, making sure there is an equal amount of fabric on both sides of the bed. The finished side should always face down, but this is often overlooked. This way the finished pattern or stitching will be visible when the sheet is folded for display.

Tuck the bottom of the sheet under the mattress and along the sides of the bed. In particular, we recommend using hospitable corners, which we will focus on below.

make hospital corners

The term "hospital corners" refers to a specific design feature of hospital beds, although it is also commonly used in the hospitality and military industries. Most people would agree that this is the most convenient method of making the bed. The end product is sophisticated and elegant, despite the name's lack of style.

These are the simple steps you need to follow:

  1. Make sure the top sheet is evenly spaced with no wrinkles or curls.
  2. The ends of the sheets should be carefully tucked between the mattress and the frame or slats at the foot of the bed.
  3. It is recommended that each side has a hanging panel of fabric. Pick up the material and place it on the surface, starting at one end. Smoothes wrinkles.
  4. You can find a triangular piece of fabric hanging. Slide it under the bed.
  5. The final step is to place the reserved fabric under the mattress as well. Just like wrapping a gift, the stitching should be nice and well done.

Put the duvet or comforter down

This is an easy step if you're only using a duvet or comforter. Simply tuck it in the middle of your sheets or blanket, leaving about 15cm of extra space at the top so it can fold flat when you go to bed. It can be difficult to get a quilt or comforter that fits perfectly inside a duvet cover.

One method is to turn the lid over and reach inward with both hands to grab the corners. The corners of the quilt or comforter should be grasped while holding the inside corners of the duvet cover. Maintain a firm grip and shake the duvet cover until it flips over. You may need to do some tweaking and troubleshooting, but generally this method is the easiest.

Fold the top sheet and duvet underneath.

Now that everything is in place, you can see the finished edge by folding the top sheet. Quilts are too bulky to fold. They did this by leaving about six inches of space between the top of the comforter and the headboard.

Shake up the pillows

For a more sophisticated look in bed, always make sure your pillows are soft and in the right places. The most effective way to fluff pillows is to grab the two ends and push them toward the center. Trying to describe it would be like asking someone to play the accordion.

You can cut a long, thin accent pillow in half and use it as a divider between the mattress and the box spring. While it may sound violent, stuffing your pillow this way is harmless and adds a nice textured element to your bedroom decor.

add finishing touches

You may have noticed that with only two pillows, the aesthetic doesn't look great. Stacking pillows is a popular way to increase the number of pillows available. Alternatively, you can opt for square euro pillowcases.

Folding a blanket in thirds and placing it at the end or foot of the bed can give it a luxe hotel look. Your duvet can also benefit from this method. If you want to keep the pattern visible, instead of folding it with the top sheet, fold it three times at the foot of the bed.

healthy bed habits

Make your bed every morning

In recent years, more and more has been written about the value of a freshly made bed every morning. Increases life satisfaction and pride in personal achievements. Most of us face difficulties and difficult tasks on a daily basis. Making the bed is a small task that, if successfully completed, can give you a sense of accomplishment that will carry you through the rest of the day.

Wash your bedding every 1-2 weeks

You don't have to wash your linens every day, or even every week, but you do have to do it often. If they don't smell too bad, some people can go two weeks without washing. Duvet covers and similar items may only need to be washed every three months if they are not in direct skin contact.

Simplify the layers of the quilt

The correct method of making a duvet has been described just above. Having to go to professional (and expensive) commercial washing machines or dry cleaners to keep your linens looking their best is a major hassle that can be avoided simply by investing in a cover.

Ask a friend for help if you still have trouble putting the duvet cover on the bed.

use a mattress

Place the mattress protector on the mattress and the sheet on top. Choose a functional cover with a cooling or support function if you sleep hot or if your mattress is no longer comfortable. A simple cotton pad will keep sweat, urine and other liquids from damaging your expensive mattress.

Mattress stains are unsightly when changing linens and can void your mattress warranty.
