How to Attach a Headboard to an Adjustable Bed Frame - Sleep Junkie (2023)

If you've just purchased an adjustable bed, you might consider adding a new headboard to your base. A headboard supports your bed and also protects your wall from abrasion. Some people even use headboards to add a personal touch to their bedroom.

Assembling bedroom furniture can sometimes seem like a tedious process, especially when you don't know how to do it. In this article, we'll show you how to attach a headboard to an adjustable bed frame.

1. Locate a headboard bracket on the adjustable frame

It is not uncommon foradjustable slat framesto exclude header supports in your designs. So you should check if the supports are in the headboard or if they come in a kit or package of tools. If your foundation does not have heavy-duty steel header brackets, you will need to purchase them separately.

Typically, the owner's manual describes the type of support the base supports. When you purchase a header support kit, it will include all of the appropriate support channels, nuts, bolts, and washers to support your header.

2. Check how the headboard is attached

Now that you have your bracket kit, check out the headboard bracket to see what type of fasteners it has to connect the headboard to the bed frame. There are two types of mounting designs: "bolt-on" and "hooked" designs.

Headboards with bolt-on brackets have pre-drilled holes, while hook designs have slots for the hooks to attach. Most stands require you to drive screws through the holes in the headboard to secure it to the adjustable base. We recommend checking the hole diameter to determine what size screw you need for your bed.

3. Prepare your workplace

Before mounting your headboard to the adjustable base, you must create enough space around your bed. This may require rearranging bedroom items or flipping the base to create additional bedroom space.

Keeping your bedroom clean gives you easy access to your headboard and the tools you need to protect your bed. You may also want to work with a partner to help you line up the clamps and raise the header.

4. Attach the brackets to the adjustable frame

Once you have your workspace in order, the next step is to attach the supports to the board. Some of the instructions for attaching headboard brackets to your bed will vary between manufacturers of adjustable beds, so follow the instructions provided. However, most instruction manuals usually follow these steps:

  1. Attach the headboard support rails to the bed frame, then attach the headboard flanges to the support rails.
  2. Slide the brackets 1.5 to 2 inches from the edge of the bed to make room. This step will prevent the headboard from rubbing against the walls when the base is moved.
  3. Finally, tighten the screws with a wrench to hold the channels and bracket flanges in place.

5. Measure the mounting holes

After attaching the brackets to the frame, measure the distance between the mounting holes. Next, measure the distance between the header bracket slotted holes in the header bracket flanges.

These measurements will ensure that the header is properly aligned. If the dimensions do not match, you will need to move the header bracket flanges until the holes match before retightening the screws.

6. Place the headboard accessories

The last step is to place the header. Align the holes in the header with the brackets, and then insert the screws into the holes.

Once the headboard is in place, lower the top of the adjustable frame to a flat position. Make sure there is at least 1.5 to 2 inches of space between the box spring and the head of the bed. This will prevent the headboard from rubbing against the mattress.
